Met and driven to Polanco. If you land early we send you to Chapultepec for a walk, and dinner is somewhere unpretentious in Roma Norte.

The idea
Why this works
Mexico is too often reduced to a beach. This version starts in the capital, which is one of the great food cities in the world, then flies east to Merida, where the mansions on Paseo de Montejo were built on rope money. Uxmal and Chichen Itza are both timed for opening or closing, not the middle of the day. The last three nights are on the coast at Xpu Ha, with a snorkel morning at Akumal and not much else.
What sets it apart
- Mexico City with a food writer, from Mercado de Medellin to a mezcaleria in Roma
- Frida Kahlo's house at Coyoacan, booked ahead so you are not queueing
- Uxmal at opening, when the Puuc carvings still hold the shadows
- A cenote swim on private land, with nobody else in the water
- Turtles at Akumal with a marine biologist rather than a crowd
The plan
Day by day
Open any day to see where you are, where you sleep and what the day holds. The map follows along, and every point on it opens the day that belongs to it.
A morning eating through Mercado de Medellin with a food writer, the Rivera murals at the Palacio Nacional, then Frida Kahlo's blue house in the afternoon with tickets already held.
Breakfast, lunch
A two hour flight to the Yucatan capital and a colonial house near Santa Ana. The evening is free for the plaza, where the city eats late and loudly.
Breakfast
First through the gate at Uxmal for the Pyramid of the Magician and the Governor's Palace, back to the hacienda for lunch and an afternoon that goes nowhere near a schedule.
Breakfast, lunch
Merida's colonial centre and the mansions built on sisal rope, then out to a cenote on private land where you swim in cold clear water under a collapsed roof.
Breakfast
The drive east breaks at Valladolid for the convent and a lunch of cochinita pibil, then Chichen Itza in the last two hours of the day when the light is long and the site is emptying.
Breakfast, lunch
Nothing at all. Lagoon, beach, boat if you want one.
Breakfast
Out early to Akumal bay with a marine biologist to swim with green turtles over the seagrass, back for lunch and an afternoon in the water at the hotel.
Breakfast
The ruins at Tulum sit on a cliff above the sea and are worth the early start. If you would rather not move, we cancel it and book the spa instead.
Breakfast
Private transfer to Cancun, about fifty minutes up the highway.
