Peru, Machu Picchu and the Amazon

Met on arrival and taken to Miraflores, on the cliffs above the Pacific.

Lunch at Isolina, then a walk through the bohemian quarter with a stop at Juanito, a chocolate and coffee tasting, and a cocktail class at Hotel B to finish.

Fly to Cusco and continue straight down to the Sacred Valley, which sits lower and makes acclimatising far easier. A village stop on the way.

A light guided trek above a lagoon, accompanied by llamas, ending in a Quechua speaking community where you sit down with the people who live there.

The terraced fortress at Ollantaytambo, then the train up the valley. You can ride the whole way and visit the ruins this afternoon, or step off at kilometre 104 and walk the Inca Trail to the Sun Gate.

Back through the gates at first light, when the mist is still sitting in the terraces. Train and road to Cusco in the afternoon.

The Inca temple beneath the Santo Domingo church, the cathedral on the Plaza de Armas, a textile workshop, and the vast stone walls of Sacsayhuamán above the city. The evening is free.

The San Blas quarter and the colonial waterworks at Sapantiana in the morning, then the flight to Lima and a night near the airport before the river.

Fly to Iquitos and drive to Nauta on the Marañón, where you board a small riverboat with a staff to guest ratio above one to one. Overnight the boat cruises to Lake Clavero.

Sunrise birdwatching by skiff, then a lakeside village where you talk with the people who farm and fish here. Kayaks and swimming in the afternoon for anyone who wants them.

Scarlet macaws, pink river dolphins and giant waterlilies along the Yarapa, then a night skiff out for caiman, bats and night herons.

The Yanayacu and Tahuayo rivers, both inside a regional conservation area, with primates and birdlife along the banks and a guided walk into the forest itself.

Disembark at Nauta, visit the Iquitos market, then fly to Lima with a dayroom held for you before the flight home.
