The idea

Why this works

The whole country, north to south, staying only in the lodges that justify the detour. Huka on the Waikato, Edenhouse above Nelson, Otahuna outside Christchurch, The Lindis in the Ahuriri Valley and Eichardt's on the lake at Queenstown. Between them, the TranzAlpine railway, fly fishing on Taupo, Central Otago wine and as much or as little helicopter time as you want.

What sets it apart

  • Fly fishing on Lake Taupo with a private guide
  • Two nights at Huka Lodge on the Waikato river
  • The TranzAlpine railway across the Southern Alps
  • The Lindis, an architectural lodge alone in the Ahuriri Valley
  • Central Otago wine and helicopter days out of Queenstown

The plan

Day by day

Open any day to see where you are, where you sleep and what the day holds. The map follows along, and every point on it opens the day that belongs to it.

Into the harbour city, with its view across the Hauraki Gulf. A walk on the west coast beaches if you have the energy, and the hotel spa if you do not.

Park Hyatt Auckland

Farmland, sheep country and the geothermal ground around Rotorua, then Huka Lodge on the river above the falls, set in seventeen acres of garden.

Huka Lodge

Breakfast

A guided day after the rainbow trout Taupo is known for, with a picnic lunch at the water's edge. Riding, rafting and jet boating are all on the table instead if you prefer.

Huka Lodge

Breakfast

South and over the strait to Nelson, and Edenhouse, a five room lodge in a private valley that most people have never heard of.

Edenhouse

Breakfast

A private tasting walk through Nelson's producers, from a boutique roaster to a chocolatier, with lunch and matched wines. Or the coast path and the water at Abel Tasman.

Edenhouse

Breakfast, lunch

On to Otahuna Lodge, an 1895 Queen Anne house outside Christchurch and one of the finest of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

Otahuna Lodge

Breakfast

A private half day of the city, the two cathedrals and the botanic gardens, with the afternoon free for the Banks Peninsula or the estate's own kitchen garden.

Otahuna Lodge

Breakfast

One of the great rail journeys, across the Canterbury plains, through the tunnels and gorges of the Alps to Greymouth. Then south by road to The Lindis, alone in the Ahuriri Valley.

The Lindis

Breakfast

One of the country's best fly fishing regions is on the doorstep, along with horse trekking, cycling and high country four wheel drive. The Central Otago vineyards are a short run away.

The Lindis

Breakfast

Into Queenstown and Eichardt's, on the waterfront in the middle of town, with Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables in front of you.

A helicopter over Mount Aspiring and into Milford Sound with a glacier landing, or a slower day through the Central Otago wine country. Both can be arranged the night before.

Private transfer to Queenstown airport for your flight home.
