The idea

Why this works

Vieques is the slower sister of the Puerto Rican mainland, eight miles off the east coast, more than half of it a protected wildlife refuge that was a naval training ground until 2003. Wild horses walk the roads and the beaches are empty by Caribbean standards. The whole week is structured around one thing, the bioluminescent bay, which is only worth doing on the darkest nights of the month, so we pick the dates first and build everything else behind them. Heat sensitive mornings, shaded middays, one celebration dinner and a departure day with nothing in it.

What sets it apart

  • The brightest bioluminescent bay in the world, on a new moon night by canoe
  • Refuge beaches reached down dirt spurs, often with nobody else on them
  • A shore snorkel at the old pier for turtles and rays, no boat required
  • A chef led Caribbean tasting dinner on the waterfront
  • A black sand beach below the mountain that most visitors never find

The plan

Day by day

Open any day to see where you are, where you sleep and what the day holds. The map follows along, and every point on it opens the day that belongs to it.

A short hop from San Juan and a fifteen minute transfer to the south coast. The evening is a walk along the half mile of waterfront and a casual dinner where the owner is behind the bar. Nothing more.

A small design hotel on the Esperanza waterfront

In the water between eight and eleven while the light is soft and the sun is not yet serious. The old pier on the north shore is the best shore snorkel on the island, turtles, rays and reef fish along the pilings. Afternoon in the shade, dinner on the terrace above the water.

Breakfast

Deliberately unstructured until dark. The bio bay goes tonight because the moon is at its thinnest, out by transparent canoe with a guide for an hour, dinoflagellates lighting under every paddle stroke. A late pizza and a drink afterwards if you want one.

Breakfast

A jeep and a picnic packed in town, then the refuge beaches, a wide one first and a sheltered cove afterwards that is usually empty. Back in time for the best dinner on the island, a chef led Caribbean tasting booked weeks ahead.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner

A slow breakfast, a last look at the water and a transfer timed to the flight. Nothing scheduled, which is the point of the last morning.
