The idea
Why this works
Twelve days across the whole country rather than a long weekend in one city. Fes for three nights, because the medina deserves them, Roman mosaics at Volubilis, a night under canvas in the Erg Chebbi dunes reached by four wheel drive and then camel, the kasbah road through the Dades Valley, and Marrakech at the end with time to actually use it.
What sets it apart
- Fes el Bali on foot, with the bronze and pottery workshops
- Volubilis and its mosaic floors, still in place
- A private desert camp in the dunes, reached by camel at dusk
- Aït Benhaddou and the road of a thousand kasbahs
- Jardin Majorelle, the Yves Saint Laurent museum and a cooking class
The plan
Day by day
Open any day to see where you are, where you sleep and what the day holds. The map follows along, and every point on it opens the day that belongs to it.
The Hassan II Mosque, whose minaret is the tallest religious structure in the world, then Rabat for the Mohammed V Mausoleum, the Hassan Tower and the Oudaya Kasbah. On to Fes in the evening.
Breakfast
Fes el Bali and its nine thousand lanes, with the bronze workers, the potters and the Karaouine, founded in 859 and still teaching. Nejjarine Square, then the royal palace gates, the madrasas and the mellah in Fes el Jadid.
Breakfast
A day trip to Volubilis, the best preserved Roman site in the country, where the mosaic floors of the merchant houses are still where they were laid.
Breakfast
A long and genuinely beautiful drive past Berber villages, date plantations and the High Atlas, ending at a small hotel on the desert edge where dinner is grown locally.
L'Hotel by Château de Sable
Breakfast, dinner
The fortified town of Rissani, then into the Erg Chebbi by four wheel drive and the last stretch by camel, arriving at a private tented camp for mint tea, dinner and a fire under the stars.
Private desert camp
Breakfast, dinner
West through the Dades Valley with the High Atlas on your right, arriving in Ouarzazate, once a caravan stop and now the country's film capital.
Le Berbère Palace
Breakfast, dinner
The seventeenth century Kasbah of Tifoultoute, then the earthen fortress village of Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO site you will recognise from a dozen films.
Le Berbère Palace
Breakfast, dinner
The Tizi n'Tichka pass and the villages along it, then down into the red city. The rest of the day is yours to do nothing at all.
Breakfast
The Koutoubia minaret, the Ben Youssef Madrasa, and Djemaa el Fna as it fills in the late afternoon. The souks afterwards, if you have the appetite for them.
Breakfast
The garden Jacques Majorelle planted and Yves Saint Laurent later saved, the museum next door, and an afternoon learning to use Moroccan spices properly.
Breakfast
Private transfer to the airport for your flight home.
